When Brendan Eich invented JavaScript, he didn't know it'd become the catalyst for invasive tracking that now plagues the web. Today’s online ecosystem is broken, bogged down by the surveillance economy. It not only exploits user data; it also slows page loads, drains batteries, and creates a miserable user experience. Browsing data is being sold without consent to fund the web, ad fraud is pervasive, publishers are losing over half of ad revenue to middlemen and user experience is poor. Brendan, joined by Fatemeh Khatibloo, Principal Analyst of Forrester, will discuss why neither privacy regulations nor Big Tech’s policy changes are the full solutions. They’ll talk about the link between privacy and user experience, how to reject surveillance capitalism and what the road ahead looks like.
